Short Tables
May 24 2008
Short table poker means fewer cards in play. That means that your opponents have fewer chances of getting a good hand. So if your opponents have fewer chances to get good cards, then you should be taking advantage of this. With everyone getting weak cards, the first to bet will often be the one who wins the pot. That means that your opponents will often be very aggressive in these types of games.
Poker is a positional game, and it’s very important in short table poker to take advantage of your position. If everyone checks around their rags to you when you’re on the button, a button raise to steal the blinds is a high-percentage play. The same will apply to the blind positions if no aggression has been shown thus far in the hand. Continue your aggression on the flop, which is often missed by everyone at short tables. Any time that the rest of the players don’t show interest in the pot can be an opportunity to pick up some free chips.
Stack size should also play a big role in your aggression. You can bully small-stacked opponents who are waiting for a big hand with which to try and double up. Raise it up when they’re in the blinds and make the game expensive. If they play, they have a big hand and you can play the rest of the hand knowing that.
