The Top Three Traits of Winning 7-Card Stud Poker Players

7 Card Stud, Stud Games
June 20 2008

7-Card Stud is one of the more difficult poker games for the new “Texas Holdem poker generation” to master. It’s not hard to see that 7-Card Stud is a very different game than Texas Holdem, and it requires different tools and tactics to win consistently. To start along the path to playing winning 7-Card Stud, you must have these three traits.

Be Patient – 7-Card Stud could be called the waiting man’s poker game because it takes great patience to play well. With the large number of betting rounds in a hand of 7-Card Stud, an impatient or rash person can quickly run through a chip stack in only a few hands. Having the patience to wait for good cards and situations that favor you is a must to play winning 7-Card Stud.

Be Observant – One of the big differences between a game like 7-Card Stud and Texas Holdem is the ability to see some of your opponents’ cards. Not only can seeing these cards give you hints as to what they may be holding, it can also give you much-needed information on your own hand and any draws you may be on. It’s great to be dealt two aces as your down cards, but they lose a lot of their value if the other two aces are already showing in other players’ hands. If you’re not observant enough to notice these dead aces, you could cost yourself a ton of chips in that one hand. Being observant can also help you figure out what kind of hands your opponents like to play, and how far they will chase certain draws.

Be Aggressive – Many players don’t differentiate between being patient and being aggressive; they are truly two different things. You should be patient while waiting for the time to strike, but when that time arrives you must be aggressive. Well-timed aggression is the key component to most winning poker players and allows them to win big pots while the rest of us pull in a few chips at a time or none at all.

Think you have these three traits? Test them out in a game of 7-Card Stud in the Bodog Poker Room!
