We all try to get the best possible value for our tournament dollar. The best tournament deal you can find is the freeroll. These are tournaments that are usually open to anyone who wants to play in them. They cost nothing to enter and often have big fields with as many as 10,000 players. Some are smaller, but the bigger online poker rooms make them available to as many players as possible.
Some poker rooms use the freeroll tournament as one of their most powerful promotional tools. They will provide numerous freerolls each day to keep players in the action who have busted out. Players have the opportunity to win themselves a bankroll to play with, and don’t have to dig into their pockets to play until they can afford to. Many players track all the freerolls on the internet and go from one event to the next. There are lots of websites that track the tournaments in the different poker rooms and list which are coming up next.
Freerolls can take on a lot of different forms. They can be straight multi-table tournaments or satellites for bigger events. The satellites usually only require that you finish in the top 50 (or so) positions to get to the next round. The cash freerolls will usually pay out as soon as you win, but some may require that you play tournaments only with your winnings; it depends on the poker room’s generosity. Either way they make for a good option when you’ve busted out and have to wait to buy in.
