Taking notes on opponents is a very profitable practice. In live games, and in the early years of online poker, all this documentation had to be done manually. Now online poker rooms have software that allows you to keep most of your player information right in your account. They make it quite easy to keep player notes.

Good players have their “action players” book that’s full of players they have recognized to be either loose/passive or loose/aggressive. These action players can produce big profits if you get a good seat to their left. Playing a tight/aggressive style will be profitable, even if you don’t run the best. And it can be a great windfall when the cards run with you and you’re well set up against an action player.

In future games when you find yourself against one of these players, you’ll have some information on how they play. Better still, you can search out games where these players may be playing, and you can patiently wait for that magic seat where they will dump bets to you every time you hit a decent hand. If you can put yourself in these playing situations often enough, your win/loss rate will improve.
