Beginner Strategies,
Poker Tells
July 24 2008
If you’re a beginner poker player you most likely have a set table image. You may be tight, loose, passive or aggressive. It doesn’t matter which you are, as long as you know which profile you fall under.
If you can label yourself there’s a good chance that at least a few of your opponents at the table have also pinned that same label on you and have started making reads on your cards and your play. Believe it or not, this is not necessarily a bad thing if you can successfully use it to your advantage.
Let’s say you’ve been tabbed as a loose player. You play a lot of hands and see a lot of them past the flop. This likely means a lot of players will play against you because they know you’ll play cards that aren’t that good. That means you can clean up when you do catch big hands.
If you’ve been tabbed as a tight player then it’s probably common for most people to fold whenever you bet. This can be frustrating unless you use your tight image to pull off some big bluffs or steal some pots. Just remember this will likely shred your tight image, so don’t go too far or you could end up giving back all the chips you just won if your bluffs eventually get called.
