Importance of the Blinds in Sit and Go Poker Tournaments

Sit and Go Tournaments, Table Position
April 28 2008

There are two factors in Sit and Go tournaments that become more important than they would be in a normal poker setting. One is stack size, and the other is blind size. The two sort of go hand-in-hand because in a Sit and Go you are trying to keep your stack size ahead of the blind size. These tournaments have an elevated blind structure, meaning that the blinds are raised far more often. This creates a setting where aggression is essential to your survival, and playing super-tight in a Sit and Go will be a disaster.

It doesn’t take very long for the blinds to become a factor in these tournaments. As they rise you must compare them to the size of your stack, and if they become a significant percentage of it you must pump your aggression to steal some pots or get lucky. That rule applies to any poker event; it’s just juiced up in the Sit and Go context.

If you’re a smart player you will use this knowledge against your opponents as well. You should be recognizing when an opponent needs to pump it up, and you can put the pressure on them before they can make their bet. They will usually be playing marginal cards in a late position, so a raise before then puts them in a bad spot. You can also make looser calls on them because you know they’re under pressure and they have fewer chips than you, so you won’t be in danger of busting out.
