Five Important Betting Odds To Know When Playing 7-Card Stud Poker

7 Card Stud, Poker Odds
June 27 2008

Playing 7-Card Stud can be an expensive game for a novice poker player. With so many betting rounds, many players bleed chips when they first start out playing 7-Card Stud. One big problem beginners run into is going against the odds, which is always a losing proposition in the long run. With so many cards as winning options, 7-Card Stud relies heavily on the odds, and not knowing them can cost you a lot of cash. Here are five important odds you should know and remember in order to play winning 7-Card Stud poker.

424-to-1 – Those are the odds against being dealt three of a kind in your first three cards. Not very high, are they? If you do luck out an early three of a kind, don’t waste it. Be aggressive and make sure it’s a winner.

6-to-1 – Those are the odds against making a straight if your first three cards are sequential. If your first three cards are 6-7-8, your chances of turning that into a straight may not be as low as you thought.

5-to-1 – Those are the odds against making a flush if your first three cards are suited. These odds may make chasing after a flush look like a good risk, but again, make sure you scope out the rest of the table before betting too much without realizing many of your outs are already dead.

1.4-to-1 – Those are the odds against making two pair if you are dealt a pair in your first two cards. A hand worse than two pair hardly ever wins in 7-Card Stud, which makes these odds so important to remember.

1.1-to-1 – Those are the odds against making a flush if your first three cards are suited and you catch a card of the same suit on Fourth Street. If you don’t catch a card of the suit you’re looking for on Fourth Street, the odds go up to 2-to-1. Chasing a flush almost always has good odds, but remember to always examine your opponents’ upcards because that will give you more precise odds on making your flush.
