Smart poker players don’t just play the cards they’ve been dealt, they also play the rest of the table as well. If you’re relying on the cards to win every hand, you’re relying solely on luck. However, by adjusting your play to the table you’re at, you’re also relying on skill to win you a few pots.
If you find yourself at a loose table, you have to adjust your play to avoid bleeding chips. A loose table is very easy to adjust to because all it takes is patience. At a loose table, most players will play far too many hands and end up taking those hands too far past the flop. This means a lot of chips in the middle, but unless you’re careful it can also mean a lot of your chips in the middle that end up in someone else’s stack.
Against a loose table you have no choice but to tighten up. If you follow suit and play loose as well, you open yourself up to some big losses that could shred your stack very quickly. You need to avoid bluffing or making any attempts to steal pots because those tactics don’t work against loose players. What you need is a premium hand, or at least a great flop that will allow you to put a big dent into your opponents’ stacks in just one hand. If you can be patient and pull in a few sizable pots you should make a nice profit at a loose table.
