7 Card Stud Hi Lo,
Hand Selection
August 1 2008
Proper starting hand selection in 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo is a bit trickier than other forms of poker. In 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo, you want to play cards that give you the opportunity to win both hands, low and high. So hands like A-A-2 give you that type of opportunity. The aces get you started towards the high hand, and the A-2 gets you on your way to the low hand. If the aces are suited, the hand is even better because the possibility to make a flush is there.
If you don’t have a starting hand that gives you chances to win both hands, you should have a good start for one of them. Rolled up trips and high pairs with a good kicker are good starts for high hands. You’ll want to have at least a pair or three to a suit or straight to attempt to win high hand. For low hand you’ll need to have three cards under 9 to start. This is a minimum, and you should have three cards under 7 or 6 preferably.
These rules are for a regular period of play. You’ll want to loosen it up a bit late in a tournament because bets will be so big it won’t be best to play too tight.
