7 Card Stud Hi Lo,
Hand Selection
July 26 2008
Most 7-Card Stud variations have antes and bring-ins, and 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo is no exception. These bets are there to force the action by building up the pot before the hand gets started. The ante and bring-in amounts will elevate as the game goes on if you’re in a tournament, and are paid by everyone who is dealt cards at the table. They force the action because the antes are big enough to make every hand worthwhile.
The bring-in is another forced bet, which the player with the smallest door card (first card shown up) has to pay. The cost is usually half the size of the early bet, and the player making it has the option to raise it to the full bet.
In other Stud games, the bring-in is usually paid, and then that player will often fold on the next betting round because they have bad cards. But in 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo, having the smallest card showing could be an advantage for you if you’ve got two other low cards in the pocket. Regardless, you have to pay every time the cards fall that way. It’s just part of the game.
